Last Tuesday, at an extraordinary meeting, most of the countries member of the Central American Integration System (SICA) requested the return of Honduras to the Organization of American States.
Presidents Laura Chinchilla from Costa Rica, Porfirio Lobo Sosa from Honduras, Alvaro Colom from Guatemala, Mauricio Funes from El Salvador and Ricardo Martinelli from Panama, together with Vice-President Rafael Alburquerque from Dominican Republic and Natural Resources and Environment Minister from Belize, Gaspar Vega, signed a declaration requesting the return of Honduras to the OAS, which rejected the country unanimously after the coup d´etat of June 28th, 2009.
The declaration was not supported by Nicaraguan President, Daniel Ortega, who said that it was "a bad thing for Central American integration and unity".
"Here in Nicaragua (last year), the SICA approved a resolution where it was made clear that Honduras couldn´t be recognized, until the necessary conditions to recognize the country are met", said Ortega, according to the official newspaper of the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional party.
Ortega said the decision was "absurd and ridiculous" and said that it goes against the previous position of the SICA with reference to this issue.
Meanwhile, Lobo said that Daniel Ortega should stop opposing the inclusion of Honduras in international spaces. "I know that deep down, he wants all Central American people to be together, and we will", he said, according to La Tribuna newspaper.
On July 30th, the OAS General Assembly will meet in Washington, where the return of Honduras will be considered. Recently, the National Front of Popular Resistance from Honduras, which comprises a wide range of social movements and organizations gathered to reject the coup d´etat issued a statement where they reaffirm their rejection to Lobo´s administration and demanded the OAS to deny Honduras access to the organization.
