In parallel to this, African peasant women members of La Via Campesina will meet at the 2nd Rural Women’s Assembly in the South of Africa, to be held on November 20 to December 2, organized by several peasant and farmers groups. La Via Campesina will also participate in the Global Day of Action to be held on December 3 to demand climate justice, together with thousands of activists from other organizations.

A special Day for Agroecology and Food Sovereignty will be marked on December 5 both in Durban and in the rest of the world. It is an event organized by La Via Campesina and ESSAF regional, ESSAF Uganda, ESAFF Zimbabwe, ROPPA, TCOE and Surplus People Project.

“We know that the key sources of emissions that cause climate change are the globalized corporate food system based on industrial agriculture destined to exports and agrofuels, transport systems based on private vehicles instead of public transport and the transnational corporations’ polluting factories”, reads the call issued by La Via Campesina. “Without real and enforceable commitments to change this system there is no hope of preventing the virtual incineration of our cultivable lands and of feeding the world”.

La Via Campesina’s call concludes: “We are peasants and we currently produce most of the food consumed in this planet. We and our production are in danger because of the rising temperatures, the changes that affect the harvest seasons and the increasingly frequent hurricanes, drought and floods. We provide clear, scientifically-proved solutions to climate change by means of agroecologic and local food production by peasants based on the principle of Food Sovereignty”.
