Real World Radio interviewed Gerardo Rojas, a member of Voces Urgentes (Urgent Voices), which is also part of the National Association of Community, Free and Autonomous Broadcasters (ANMCLA) of Ecuador.
Rojas participated in the International Meeting “Building a Democratic Agenda of Communications” held in Quito, Ecuador, on behalf of his group. The aim of the meeting was to agree on a common agenda, common problems and perspectives of the alternative media in South America.
He said that the process of strengthening the building of community power in Venezuela paves the way for the entrenchment of the of free communication channels that involve the communities and break with the mainstream message of the capitalist media.
“Any political change implies also to build subjectivity and that entails the contents of the media but also its format”, said Gerardo Rojas. He said that some processes of political change make the mistake of reproducing the old communication formats imposed by the corporations.
About the meeting, the Venezuelan communicator said that this also happens in a political context to pursue and build alternative information networks, which from different approaches are able to send a truthful message about the changing reality of Latin America and its resistance and the future or ongoing alternative construction processes.
Gerardo told Real World Radio that the approval of the so called “Spring Law”, which regulated the communications companies, opened the debate about interests, media and communication ends in Venezuela. This is an ongoing debate.
