Around 100 armed men attacked on Saturday the indigenous community Las Trojes I from San Juan Sacatepéquez, because of their opposition to the building of a cement plant of the company Cementos Progreso.
According to the Noj Student Community´s website, the attack resulted in several injured people, one of them who had to be hospitalized.
The indigenous community is demanding the Guatemalan government to take all measures needed to put an end to the repression suffered by Las Trojes I, to trial the people responsible for these hostile actions and to ensure the presence of UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of Indigenous Peoples, James Anaya, in San Juan Sacatepequez.
In fact, it is probable that the attack was an attempt to sabotage the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur scheduled for June 15th.
But this was not the only attack suffered by Las Trojes I these last days: last Wednesday, fifty workers of the cement company kidnapped three trucks hired by the community to transport ballast to repair a road which had been destroyed by Agatha storm.
