The Rural Landless Peasant Movement of Bolivia (MST-B) is reporting the atrocities committed by Katsumi Bani, the mayor of San Juan de Yapacani municipality (Santa Cruz department), against Divino Niño community.
Over 350 families of that community are settled in fiscal lands of San Juan de Yapacani municipality, but they have been violently evicted from their homes under orders of Bani, according to a report of MST-B published on their website. Nearly 200 police officers, with the support of 100 crooks, evicted the peasants by force and broke their houses down.
The MST-B Communications Commission launched a brief documentary, in two parts, where the affected families expose that the lands they have been living in did not fulfill an economic or social role before.
Bani, a Bolivian national born of Japanese parents, who according to MST-B follows the separatist line of the governor of Santa Cruz department, Ruben Costas, claims to be the owner of the lands where Divino Niño community settled. But the mayor “never submitted any documents supporting that”, claims the MST-B on its website.
In the documentary, made by the movement’s Communication Commission, many members of the evicted community tell their version of the violent assault against them and the reality they have to suffer every day. “This fight is to win now” cry the MST-B members while lifting their fists.
