The options for the Guatemalan in the coming runoff of the presidential elections on November 6 are not very promising.
Retired general Otto Perez Molina, of the right-wing Patriot Party will confront lawyer Manuel Baldizon, of the conservative Lider party. Some local organizations have already express their lack of interest in supporting either candidate in the elections.
“It would seem there are differences, but there are not. The only project of both candidates is the neoliberal one”, said the Maya Waqib´Kej National Coordination in a press conference called to express their political opinion on the elections.
They define Perez Molina as a “servile ally of the oligarchy and the US imperialism” and they remember the sad story of the Guatemalan military in power that at the end of the 20th century caused actual massacres against the people.
Meanwhile, according to the Waqib´Kej, the candidate for the Lider party represents “the emerging burgeoisie” and his purported alternatives are to further develop the neoliberal model, cheap labor, free trade agreements and the selling of natural resources.
“Both candidates use the impoverishment of our people in their propaganda”.
They also demanded the next president to respect the over 58 community consultations carried out throughout the country following ILO’s Convention 169.
They also asked for a moratorium on mining, hydroelectric, oil and monoculture concessions.
