Argentinian human rights organizations demand end to impunity in Uruguay

Download: MP3 (1.4 Mb)

This week, families of the people arrested and disappeared during the last military dictatorship that took place in Argentina wrote a letter to demand the repeal of a law that has ensured impunity for the violators of human rights during the dictatorship in Uruguay.

The letter is signed by Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Families of People Arrested and Disappeared for Political Reasons, and Sons and Daughters for Identity and Justice and against Oblivion and Silence.

The letter reads that Uruguay “has the historic opportunity to trial its executioners, to put an end to impunity”, protected by Law 15,848.

“Uruguayan people are our brothers and sisters, we share with them the pain of the people arrested and disappeared, the hundreds of clandestine centers, the search for our sons and daughters, the evil concealment of the fate of the people disappeared, the implementation of an economic, political, cultural and social model of exclusion and hunger by a systematic extermination plan”, reads the letter. The organizations also add that after a long fight, the Argentinian people achieved the repeal of laws that prevented perpetrators to go to trial.

“This opened the doors to the possibility of ending impunity: currently, over 100 repressors of the last dictatorship are facing trial in the country. This is a historic moment and a success for the people”, they add.

The organizations are calling the Uruguayan people to express their rejection to the law, and said that trials are a “healing experience”, for the families and for the society as a whole.

“We can´t conceive a present or a future without condemning the crimes that hurt as all”, they conclude.
