The Brazilian mass media focused its attention on it. This was the way they found to question the activity of the Rural Landless Peasants’ Movement (MST) and the alleged “complicity” of officials of the ruling Workers Party (PT).
But the partner of the hour does not have a good record, nor is it known for its good practices. The Brazilian Ministry of Labor filed a complaint in court against citric corporation Cutrale on Friday, after an inspection verified labor irregularities in outsourced workers who collect fruit in their fields.
The complaint, asking for a compensation for the workers, includes other companies of the sector like Louis Dreyfous, Citrovita and Fischer, the MST said in a press release.
The lack of pension fund contributions for the workers, bad health conditions and unfit equipment are some of the irregularities found by the inspectors in Cutrale facilities, the main promoter (and supporter) of the outsourcing of their productive chain. Now the Ministry of Labor demands that the workers become part of Cutrale’s pay roll, without intermediaries.
The MST’s relation with Cutrale, partner of US company Coca-Cola, became complicated on January, when the judiciary ordered the prosecution of nine MST members who had occupied lands of the company in October of last year.
The court prosecuted the workers after a media operation established by Rede Globo in the first place, which showed images of a tractor crushing orange trees, and had ample coverage the following days.
The MST answered to this parody of the right wing, saying it had “electoral intentions” and began a national and international campaign to let people know about the abuses of Cutrale, which is exploiting lands of the Brazilian state.
The Union of Journalists of Sao Paulo and the National Federation of Journalists repudiated the work done by the mass media in the incident, since they never considered the MST’s position.
