In the past days, the Haitian people have been protesting against the presence of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah), demanding the Nepali contingent to leave the country, who are accused of spreading cholera causing the death of over one thousand people.

The Haitian people blame Nepali soldiers for being the source of the disease, which hadn´t been present in the country in the past 100 years, since the strain found in the country was the same than that found in South East Asia. However, the Minustah denied this.

The riot took place in Cap-Haïtien, to the North of the country. Although the Haitian authorities requested the population to remain calm, the situation got worse when the police and the Minustah shot to the air over the crowd and used tear gases. The population then responded throwing stones at the repressive forces.

In Cap-Haïtien a young man was shot and died, and another man died when a Minustah officer shot him in the back, in Quartier Morin.

16 people were injured during the protests, and several people were arrested. In addition to causing hundreds of deaths, cholera has reached 18,382 Haitian people, spreading panic among the population, who still hasn’t recovered from the devastating earthquake that hit the country in January, 2010.
